KNOWLEDGE IS POWER.
By exploring these studies, you'll gain a deeper understanding of how the Alexander Technique can:
by Dr. Joseph Weissenberg
Dr. Little conducted a comparative, randomized, controlled study of the effectiveness of the Alexander Technique (after six or twenty-four lessons), classical massage and light exercise in patients with chronic or recurrent back pain. This study was published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ 2008;337;a884doi:10.1136/jmj.a884). Patients with recurrent lumbar back pain from 64 general practices in the South West of England were randomized into four groups:
- 1 - Control group - usual general medical treatment 144 participants
- 2 - Six classical massage sessions 144 participants
- 3 - Six Alexander Technique lessons 144 participants
- 4 - Twenty-four Alexander Technique lessons 144 participants
A total of 579 patients were involved. The study was conducted from July 2002 to July 2004 and was based on questionnaires, activity limitations due to back pain (Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire) and pain days (Korff scale, Deyo "troublesomeness" scale, agree-disagree scale 1-7) within the last four weeks before the survey. Measurements were taken immediately before the first treatment, three months and one year after the start of the trial series. In addition, half of each of the four groups received a medically prescribed individual exercise program with three consultation sessions with a medical specialist. The study also showed that a placebo effect can be ruled out by paying attention to the patient's touch.
Results after one year:
The Alexander Technique group with 24 hours of instruction achieved an 86% reduction in pain. The additional exercise program had no effect.
The Alexander Technique group with 6 hours of lessons combined with the exercise program achieved an improvement of 72%.
The massage sessions combined with the exercise program achieved an improvement of 33% fewer pain days. However, this was only evident when measured after three months. No long-term effect was discernible when measured after one year.
The exercise program and massage only showed changes in the short-term study. The Alexander Technique scored particularly well in the long-term data. While the prescribed exercise programs achieved no or only minor changes in the survey after 12 months, the result shows that the Alexander Technique had a long-lasting effect on the patients' performance and quality of life.
General Thesis: Alexander Technique changes body awareness and thinking habits. It therefore has a positive effect on the quality of professional, music-specific stage presence by Joseph Weissenberg.
In this baseline study by Joseph Weissenberg, the effects of the Alexander Technique on performance behavior, i.e. stage presence, are shown. To this end, he taught three female students at the Music University Mozarteum in Salzburg for one semester in Alexander Technique. The experimental subjects showed the changes that were recorded with a camera in a simulated stage situation at the beginning and end of the semester. The evaluation of the clips in terms of stage presence was carried out by teachers and students of the Alexander Technique and music students. 88% of those questioned decided ...
Inga Bronowki Study
by Dr. Joseph Weissenberg
The study showed significant improvements in body awareness, self-regulation abilities, and sometimes action planning. These changes were confirmed both qualitatively and quantitatively. Participants also reported feeling more relaxed, mindful, and able to manage stress and pain better. They felt more in tune with themselves.
The Alexander Technique not only makes people feel better but also helps them deal with unpleasant experiences and emotions. It strengthens the alignment between what people want and what they do, helps them overcome obstacles on their own, and supports the planning and achievement of goals by enhancing self-awareness.
